Criminal Injuries Compensation Association

Sadly not all injuries are are caused by accidents. If you have been injured as a result of a crime or violence such as a mugging or an assault you may be entitled to make a compensation claim.

To be eligible to make an application to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Association (CICA) the person injured (the “Applicant”) must have been directly injured as a result of a crime of violence. Even if the person who assaulted you was a cohabitant or partner living at the same address, you may still be entitled to make an application.

Unlike usual personal injury claims an application to the CICA must be made within two years of the injury. However, like other personal injury claims in some circumstances this time limit may be waved or extended by the CICA. In support of your application you must also have reported the incident to the police as soon as possible after the incident.

If you have been injured as a result of a crime of violence we recommend that you make a complaint to the police whether or not you intend to make an application to the CICA.
